O Holy Night

Recognized By Fans !

I some times forget that I'm a public figure. I assume most no one has heard of me. But upon occasion I will be reminded by someone I encounter in public that has heard of me or my music, or both. that there is definitely more people that know of me, than not.  I usually air on the side of caution when being approached by strangers, but I am very appreciative of people who enjoy the music and I really think they are swell! Some times people do ask me if I'm that musician guy who wrote the "sweet tea song"... Or they mention hipsters.  I get approached by a lot of people from out of nowhere and usually when I am least expecting it. The other night , a man next to me in the check out line of Kroger's,  was singing the words to "Sweet Tea". He then broke out into some song by the Georgia Satellites. I guess he didn't want me to know who he was ,but that he know who I was.   So, things like this do happen! He definitely had good taste in music. Some

A New Band I Discovered: The Mamas and The Pepes...

Image
Yes, that's right, Pepe's! They're grrrrreat ! I discovered them on GAB, actually. What a fantastic plethora of songs they do about the current state of affairs. This is their latest offering: Gaslight. Quite a fun and interesting little ditty!  They don't have much of a following, but they certainly should. I look forward to hearing more tunes from them. Discovering underground music is really nifty.  The best way to describe their sound is Conservative Rock.  Some of my favorite tunes by them include "Anchor Baby" ,  and the wonderful "Degeneracy". Hope to catch a live show from them soon. My personal favorite: A newer offering: Also, check them out at Bandcamp: https://mamaspepes.bandcamp.com/

Colonial Williamsburg Performances...

Image
I had the pleasure of singing at Colonial Williamsburg again for paying gigs, and it felt great! The backdrop of the historic area is very inspiring for a musician, and it's a great atmosphere that lingers on the palate. I did the Williamsburg Farmer's market in late September. Still very humid, but I made it through. I had a lot of children that enjoyed some of my songs such as "Me and My Horse", "Old Bus 48",   and others. The weather was splendid  Afterwards, I stopped to get a sandwich and was pretty tired. I had planned to stay at a hotel the night before (for an early morning show) , but just couldn't muster the nerve. So I left Richmond about 7:30 A.M. to make it to the market on time. The 9-11 A.M. slot isn't bad . Some markets have musicians play for up to 3 hours. I think it's overkill at that point. You aren't allowed tips at this market, but you can sell records. I gave out some busi

Covering another '80s Classic

Image
Stylistically, this song is much different for me. I don't usually sing these types of songs, and this song has a much  different feel than "it might be you". It's pure Pop! I'm trying to expand my vocal and using different styles to feel more comfortable singing in different ways. Honestly, though, I don't really know how to be any other kind of singer than just "me". So I just sing it Meade style, I guess. So here's "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You", by Glenn Medeiros

Singing an Old '80s Classic...

Image
This song definitely has a Country-esque feel to it, and it happened to be the theme song in the 1982 movie "Tootsie", starring Dustin Hoffman and Jessica Lange. Stephen Bishop sang the title track, although he did not write it. I always like Stephen Bishop as both a singer and songwriter. Turns out he was in quite a few things as an Actor too- including the guy who got his guitar bashed up by John Belushi in "Animal House".

Entertaining at the Old Folks Home

Image
We put on a good show for the folks at St Mary's Woods Senior Living Facility. Some people managed to even get out of their chairs and dance! I was sweating something awful because it was so hot and humid outside . I was glad to be back singing for a crowd again. Singing in my bedroom and staring  at these four walls was enough to drive me plumb crazy. We were minus one band member who was out of town, but we managed to keep up a peppy performance, with lots of stories and catchy tunes for the audience. I was really bloated, but I still managed to hit those high notes and get my yodeling voice on. Everyone enjoyed hearing about my tribute to Roy Rogers. Fun was had by all!                                                    Some fans enjoying the show                                                    Yodeling My Heart Out                                                            Nobody fell asleep !                                                         There

Wanting to be like: ELVIS !

Image
Elvis Presley Inspired my musical journey in many ways. Like most every boy I think, I went through  an I -want -to- be- like- Elvis- Presley phase. It mainly started when my dad brought me home an Elvis record after he went on a business trip to Memphis. He had visited Graceland with some of his office friends and picked it up at the gift shop . A funny story goes that while touring the mansion, my dad and the other businessmen asked the cab diver to wait for them outside, and then asked the cab driver "will you remember us?" And he politely said "sure, you'll be the only guys in there with suits on". I remember kind of really being taken in by Elvis and his style. He was the epitome of cool . He wasn't like the Beatles. They didn't inspire me the way Elvis did. He had a lot of magic and soul stirring personality in his music.  I strived to be like him- even though I was the epitome of uncool . I was kind of chubby and I

Meade Skelton Is Good Country Music...

I copied this from an article I found on a personal Tumblr blog some years ago. Unfortunately, the blog is no longer running, but I was able to copy and save this. It seems to  be a personal testimonial of some sort. I would love to find out who wrote it, and reach out to them. I venture to guess they are from my area, or Virginia, at least. Perhaps they will see this and let me know. They went by the name "That readjuster spirit". This was written in 2011 MEADE SKELTON IS GOOD COUNTRY MUSIC http://thatreadjusterspirit.tumblr.com/post/5456784096/meade-skelton-is-good-country So a while back, I wrote a little about why I think Johnny Cash doesn’t fall as squarely into that constantly-evoked realm of “good country” as folks like to pretend. So, what is good country? Two words: Meade Skelton.I’d like to start by explicating what I don’t like about Meade. Meade has a lousy sense of politics and history. He bought into the moonlight and magnolias image of Gone with the Wind

Livestreaming: Coffee Shop Country Show

Hi everyone! I am happy to announce that I will livestream on my vlog channel. Since the venues won't have me, forget them! All I need is a webcam , my voice and a few instruments, and voila! I can have plenty of viewers on my livestream. I will be doing my coffee shop country show this Sunday 8 P.M. EST . Feel free to tune in! My livestream will be on my youtube channel . Monument Floyd. Why bother with some lowly coffee shop or run down rate music venue? My back bedroom beats 'em all ! If you miss the livestream, fear not. It will be publicly archived for playback. I am very happy to be using this wonderful medium.

Clean Livin' was a hit !

Image
Last weekend, I performed at "Friends For Recovery"- a local network to get people off opioid addiction. I think they liked all the songs I did, but the real crowd pleaser was "Clean Livin;"- a song I wrote about staying away from all of life's negative influences. They really dug that one. I got some film of it live too which will be posted later. I think maybe this can be the theme song for recovering junkies everywhere!

MeadeStream Coming Soon !

Very excited to announce that I will be doing live streaming on my vlog channel account. A little bit of music, a little bit of talk, and hopefully a good time for all! I probably will broadcast on Sunday nights. Before all this starts, I have to do some upgrades to my computer equipment (including a better lap top!) camera, etc. I have decent Internet connection, but I'm still not sure how that will go, since my wifi can get weak in my back studio bedroom. Since I don't feel well enough  to travel out as much, might as well do a show from home! I will have to test the waters and see how this all goes. I have wanted to livestream for quite a while now, but I have always been apprehensive. It seems to be easier if I had a tech person to run everything for me while I was just the host/performer. But until I get that to happen, I will be running things. I can't decide what format either. I can use streamlab, google, or simply  stream through youtube. They will be coming alon

Farmer's Market Blues...

Image
I really miss playing Farmer's Markets.  In my earlier performing days, and when I was in better health, I was able to get up early enough  and drive to a farmer's market  I had booked some place  (even though not a "morning person"), and  the experience was usually very refreshing.  There's definitely an illustrious  beauty of the morning, and those earlier hours of the day,  that you do miss  over time when you simply can't get up for it.   I used to play the Farmer's Market circuit right often, and I would either get invited by word of mouth, or find some interesting ones via the Internet.  I  would scope them out within a 2 hour radius. I remember playing at different markets around Richmond, but also little country towns around Central Virginia. I remember playing the market in Orange, Mineral,  Goochland , Charlottesville, and Williamsburg. At Williamsburg one time, I made over $200 in tips.  Over time, markets refrained from allowing you to mak

Coffee Shop Country: A History...

Image
Above: Oh, dear, please don't call my music "Pop Rock". I started eagerly pursuing doing the coffeehouse gigs in about 2004, when I first played at the Mudhouse in Charlottesville, Virginia. That was one of the mainstays for me. It was on the downtown mall, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main shops . The staff was always friendly to me. One time, when I parked my car in one of those "tourist traps", I got my car towed away and they held it for ransom. I had no cash on me, so the girl who worked at the shop and her boyfriend helped me get to an ATM machine so I could withdraw some cash!  It was very of nice of them to do. So, after all, I did pay for my parking ticket, but I forgot to leave the receipt on the car. Oh, well, lesson learned. That event inspired "One More Latte In Love".. The Mudhouse also had a location in Crozet, Virginia, as well. I would play there too- although the vibe wasn't as "quaint" as the

Performing "Not That Lucky" at the Floating Folk 20th Anniversary...

Image
This is a song from my debut album "Songs By Meade Skelton", 2001. I was in a Honky Tonk phase back then , and into writing and performing a more Blusey style of Country music- reminiscent of Hank Williams Sr and Patsy Cline's early recordings. It's not my true style, like "Sweet Tea", but it was a local favorite among the Floating Folkers. The Floating Folk Festival was formed in 1997, and I got involved with them in the early 2000s.

Why I'm glad I'm not Famous....

I have seen the cost of fame in many people in the entertainment world. I find that it's not worth it.  As a non-famous person, I can live my life in solitude. I can go out in public and no one bothers me. No one  has to know who I am, where I am, or what I am doing.  I have freedom. I'm not bound by pressures of the outside world.   Years ago, I wanted fame badly. But only to prove myself to those that were mean to me in my schooling days. Those days are long gone, and many of my enemies then have long forgotten me already. Even if I became a "Star", many of them would either not know, or not care. Most people are  too consumed with the goings on of their own lives and too busy to notice or keep track of how others did in their graduating class , especially after 20 years or more have passed. The expression "What price glory?" often refers to what people give up when they pursue fame. If they make it, they find out it's not what they thought it would

Still Alive, Y'all !

A lot of folks have been wondering where I have been. I am in the process of getting a lot of stuff done at home and taking care of my father who is 83 years old. But I am still writing some new songs and lately I've been playing away at the autoharp and other instruments! I have abandoned most forms of social media, but you can find me on GAB - the fine alternative  to "twitter". GAB allows free speech! I'm Rvabread on there. And I'll be working on some new music and music videos this year. I plan on releasing my Christmas album either on vinyl or Compact Disc. Can't decide yet, maybe both! It all depends on finances. But an official Christmas album is long over do from yours truly.  Be sure and check out my latest Digital release " The Very Best of Meade Skelton" on Bandcamp. Some of the songs I am working on will be food related. I have a song called "Pass the black eyed peas" and "Chocolate is my friend".  But I'm also w

Patsy Cline and Anita Bryant...

Image
I really enjoy these two fine lady singers. I'm not really a huge fan of female vocals to be honest , but there's something about their music perhaps and vocal style that makes me want to listen more. I always felt that these two women had voices that were remarkably alike.  They both sing in the Contralto range which is much more pleasing to the ear.  I hear a lot of Patsy Cline's style in Anita Bryant and vice versa. To me they were essentially Pop singers who sang Country flavored music. That perhaps made them stand out in their Era, but wouldn't so much today. I always  seem to be in the mood for Anita Bryant and Patsy Cline. I find their voices very soothing, with  just the right of emotion and inflection without over doing it. Patsy Cline is more well known than Anita, but largely because she died in a plane crash at the age of 30. Had she not died so young, she wouldn't really have the "legendary" status she has today. Remembering that her career wa
